  • New Colors for 2XU Compression Performance Socks!

    blgo-blog-2xu-girl

2XU Compression Performance Socks and Sleeves are now available in new colors for men and women, including red, purple, green, blue, black, pink, white and navy. 2XU stands for “Two Times You” to represent the multiplication of human performance. 2XU Performance Socks and Sleeves provide 25-30mmHg graduated compression, which is ideal for athletes who want to enhance performance, decrease post-workout soreness, speed up recovery and prevent injury like shin splints. It is also great for traveling and for those who sit or stand for long periods of time to reduce swelling, prevent DVT (deep vein thrombosis) or other conditions.

2xu-running-1-cI recently tried out a pair of the Ice Green 2XU Women’s Compression Performance Socks. I went for a run before heading to the gym. My legs felt energized and fresh my whole workout. A lot of the time, my legs will ache after running on pavement or a tough work out at the gym, but after wearing these socks the next day my legs didn’t feel sore at all. These socks provide 25-30mmHg graduated compression, which means that the most pressure is felt at the bottom of your leg and decreases going up towards the knee. The graduated compression helps with muscle containment and improving blood flow, which is why you recover faster and don’t feel as sore the next day. If you are training or regularly work out, these socks are for you. Plus, they’re safe to sleep in so you don’t always wake up limping!

2XU Performance socks are extremely lightweight, made with a zoned breathability panel as well as seamless stitching for airflow. This material is truly breathable and is perfect for hot weather. Many people shy away from wearing compression socks or sleeves during the summer because they can feel hot or constricting, but thanks to 2XU, you can wear them year-round. These high-tech socks also provide UPF50+ sun protection and are antibacterial. They are made with medical circular 360 degree knit construction from 72% Nylon and 28% Elastane.

2xu-sock-image-3Another great feature is that the socks are marked with either “L” or “R” so you always know which foot to put it on. They also have the size written on the bottom of the foot, which is nice so you don’t have to figure out what size you are later on. If you have sensitive feet or have a hard time getting compression socks on and off, you should consider the 2XU compression performance sleeves. Calf sleeves are a great alternative to wearing compression socks because you can wear them with any sock or shoe you want. I would highly recommend 2XU Compression Performance Socks or Sleeves to anyone who wants to get or stay in shape. To learn more about 2XU and how these products are made, click here.

  • Serena Williams' Road to Victory

PARIS, FRANCE - JUNE 08: Serena Williams of United States of America poses with the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen after victory in the Women's Singles Final match against Maria Sharapova of Russia during day fourteen of French Open at Roland Garros on June 8, 2013 in Paris, France. (Photo by Clive Brunskill/Getty Images)Serena Williams has been making headlines as she beats out her opponents, including her older sister, Venus, at Wimbledon this year. This is Serena’s 15th time beating Venus out of the 26 times they have faced off. The sisters have been making history for years, but now it is Serena’s time to shine as she works her way towards the finish line. It’s hard to think that a few years ago, Serena felt like she was on her “death bed” when she developed a blood clot after a cross-country flight to see a doctor about her recent foot surgery. She was treated for a hematoma and pulmonary embolism (PE), which happens when a blood clot is in the lung.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a blood clot forms deep inside a vein. If part of the clot breaks off, it can travel into the lungs and block the flow of blood. This is a complication of DVT known as pulmonary embolism (PE), which can be fatal if it is not caught quickly. Luckily for Serena, she discovered the clot after a trip to New York to see a doctor about her foot injuries. After having two surgeries on her foot and traveling back and forth between Los Angeles and New York, her risk of developing DVT and PE significantly increased. Surgery can slow down your blood circulation more than usual and being immobile during the recovery period may have contributed to her clot.

    exp.nr.gupta.serena.blood.clot.cnn.640x360

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 300,000 – 600,000 people develop blood clots annually. According to the National Heart Lung and Blood institute, there are about 100,000 cases of PE that are reported each year. You are more at risk of developing DVT if you have recently had a major surgery, sit or stand for long periods of time without moving around, or from increased amounts of estrogen in the body. Other factors include your family history, pregnancy, age, obesity, smoking or chronic medical illnesses such as heart disease, lung disease, cancer and its treatment.

be8d38c714c33b1b9a93c05fb8133326Many athletes are at risk of developing DVT and PE, and in some cases, it can even be fatal. Jerome Kersey, a former forward for the Portland Trail Blazers also developed pulmonary embolism when a blood clot developed in his leg and traveled into his lung, later killing him. Miami Heat basketball player Chris Bosh also suffered from pulmonary embolism after a road trip with the team. The symptoms of PE include shortness of breath, sweating, anxiety, sharp chest pain, increased heart rate and coughing.

Why do athletes develop DVT when they are healthy and exercise? Between injuries, surgeries, long flights and tough work outs, athletes can be hard on their body. If you are dehydrated or have a low heart rate (a resting heart rate of less than 60 beats per minute), you are also more likely to develop a blood clot. When you are dehydrated, the plasma in your blood decreases, which makes your blood thicker and stickier.

britain-wimbledon-tennis-70-630x332Since her blood clot, Serena Williams has battled her way to becoming one of the most notorious female tennis players today. She has won 34 total grand slam titles, 67 singles titles, 5 Wimbledons, 4 Gold Medals and many more honors. Not even a life-threatening blood clot could stop her from achieving her dreams. If you have had a blood clot, DVT or PE, or you are at a higher risk of developing one, you can wear compression socks or sleeves to help prevent them. Compression socks increase circulation to reduce the chance of a blood clot forming. Wear them while you travel or while you work out to enhance performance, speed up the recovery time, reduce swelling and prevent injuries like shin splints.

  • 2015 Stylebook: Girl on the Go - Look 6

Looking and feeling your best when you travel is essential. During the cold months, if your destination isn't all that warm and sunny, then throw on your favorite boots and leather jacket. Going on vacation or taking a trip for work is fun and exciting, so make sure to dress the part. After all, you never know who you might run into!

The first and most important travel tip to follow is to plan ahead! Make sure you check the weather ahead of time to bring the right clothes and shoes. Always pack extras of your essential items, like socks! Just remember not to go overboard or you might find yourself paying extra to get your overly-packed suitcase on the plane. Do some research about where you are going to plan out where you want to go, places to eat and so on. Take out some extra money just in case something goes missing or you see something that you just can't live without. Remember to be friendly and don't shy away from asking questions. If you take a cab, ask the driver what their favorite hangouts are or what restaurant they would suggest for dinner. Try to be open to new experiences because you may never get the opportunity again. Last but not least, don't forget a camera!! Even if you're not super thrilled about your destination, you never know when you'll catch a breathtaking sunset.

    Polyvore-Travel set

Whether you are hopping on a plane or sitting in a dreadfully long car ride, make sure you bring a pair of compression socks! When you sit or stand for a long time, your legs start to ache and cramp. When you wear a pair of compression socks that provide 15-20mmHg of gradient compression, it helps to improve circulation, energize your legs, prevent swelling and reduce fatigue. The featured socks are made by Sockwell and are available in four different colors. Wear them to work, while traveling or at the gym. They are antibacterial, blister-proof and have a seamless toe closure to prevent irritation while skiing, hiking or during other sports. Spring Wardrobe

It’s time to start breaking out those summer dresses ladies! Floral prints are back in action. Choose neutral colors during the spring and try to avoid "beachy" dresses that are harder to pull off in the colder months without looking out of place. To polish off your look, start adding in some summer-inspired accessories like these golden flower earrings to make your spring look pop. But until it starts to feel like summer, you might want to keep rocking the tights. Grab a pair of GOGO compression tights to avoid having tired legs by the end of the day. They are perfect for wearing day or night. • Best Socks for Teachers

    Sockwell Socks and Teachers

My family is full of teachers whether blood or honorary and the one complaint I hear most often (aside from grading papers) is - "My feet and legs hurt!" After a long day of standing and teaching who can blame them? Many teachers spend a good majority of the day on their feet. In my mom's case she happens to be an English professor. Her field, of course, requires lengthy discussions of literature which for added effect sound better standing up, or if you are Robin Williams in Dead Poets Society standing on your desk reading Walt Whitman's O Captain! My Captain! Long story short, your feet and legs are tired after all is said and done. Standing for hours puts a huge amount of stress on your circulatory system - it has to fight gravity to get blood from your feet to your heart for fresh oxygen. This causes cramping, heavy legs and even varicose and spider veins.

The good thing about these problems is they are easily fixed, especially with BrightLife Go's compression line. BrightLife Go offers professional and comfortable compression socks in different lengths and styles. Either way it is possible to be stylish and comfortable while teaching! My favorite styles from this collection are:

    Top and Derby Compression Socks
These fun, geometric shaped socks come in 3 great color schemes and are designed for men and women. Perfect for a long day on your feet.

Top and Derby compression socks in Coral of the Story

GoGo Diamond Knit Knee High Socks
Available in a variety of colors from deep blacks to rich blues with a fun diamond knit to create the perfect socks for any outfit!

    Sigvaris Soft Opaque Thigh Highs
Available in a variety of colors and are super soft.

    Sockwell Men's Argyle Compression Socks
Available in a variety of colors. A professional man's sock with the health benefits of graduated compression and arch support.

    MARVY Striped Compression Socks
Last but not least, these striped compression socks come in three colors to add some style to any outfit. Comfortable, cute and a must-have for every fashionista.
